It seems like yesterday that MakerClub, took to the stage to pitch our hearts out at the Creative Business Cup 2015.
For this year’s entrants, all we can say is, enjoy every moment!
So many wonderful things came from the competition, including the chance to work with LEGO – which was a dream come true for a little educational technology start-up from Brighton!
After a sleepless night’s pitch practising, we ended up in the last 10 for the main competition and actually won the Cultiva Play and Learn Challenge.
There isn’t a day that goes past where we don’t mention our win to potential investors, press and anyone that will listen. The certificate still has pride of place on our office wall! 🙂
The Creative Business Cup gave us credibility in the eyes of investors as well as the chance to meet dozens of other exciting companies, all starting out on their respective journeys.
Since the CBC, MakerClub has gone from strength to strength, starting after-school clubs in 5 UK cities, doubling the size of our team and going to work with some of the biggest names in education, delivering awesome technology and invention courses to over 2500 young people.
The CBC marks the beginning of a lot of that for us.
As we’re old hands at this now, so we thought we’d put together some top tips for this year’s lucky companies:
Practise your pitch, but make sure you put your head above the water to take a breath and enjoy the moment.
Make sure you speak to as many people as possible. You never know who is going to be able to help on your mission!
Get friendly with other startups and learn from each other!
Copenhagen is GREAT for going out, so be sure to check out its cafes, bars and restaurants while you’re there – (responsibly!)
The Tivoli Gardens evening laser light show is one of the weirdest and best things EVER – do it.
Before your pitch, go and find a quiet place, have a breather and remember that just getting to this point is a massive achievement, anything else is a bonus.
Our CEO, Simon Riley is doing a talk this year at the event, so please come and say hello, you never know what it might lead to!
